Factors to consider when looking for a private tutor

As a parent, looking for a private tutor for your child can be a little daunting. You want a tutor who has the right skill set, experience and teaching style to inspire your child and help them to reach their potential… but where do you start?

We’ve put together some top tips to help you when looking for a tutor.

Qualifications

One of the most important factors when it comes to looking for a tutor is the qualifications they possess. If they are an ECT – Early Careers Teacher (formerly an NQT) or are they a QTS – Qualified Teacher Status, it means they are qualified teachers or are currently studying to become a qualified teacher. This is something to look out for when you are searching for a private tutor.

Up-to-date curriculum knowledge

Another factor to consider is if the tutor has current curriculum knowledge. In most instances, you will be looking for a private tutor to provide extra support on top of your child’s current work within the classroom. It would be beneficial for the tutor to have the up-to-date subject knowledge, to complement the learning that takes place within the classroom.

Teaching style

Each child reacts differently to different teaching methods. It is important that your child can build a relationship with their tutor and feel enthusiastic about learning. Children can find it harder to learn in their home environment, so finding a tutor who inspires your child will make it easier for them to learn at home.

Enhanced DBS & Safeguarding

If the tutor is a qualified teacher they will already hold an enhanced DBS check. All tutors on the Affinity Tutors platform have registered with Affinity Workforce Solutions – a regulated company with Gold Standard in Safeguarding. Every tutor has completed a rigorous compliance process that is in line with ‘Keeping Children Safer in Education’ and hold a current enhanced DBS.

Free Trial

Many tutors on the Affinity Tutors learning platform offer a free trial and we would recommend that you take up this opportunity. This is a chance for you and your child to meet the tutor, find out a little bit about them and their background and ask any questions you have about their tuition delivery. The tutor may deliver a sample tutoring session, so you get an insight into their tutoring style.
