Climate change is one of the biggest challenges our planet faces. Average global temperatures are increasing, extreme weather conditions are becoming severe and ocean levels are rising.

To help do our part for the planet, Affinity Workforce has launched a brand new campaign, Affinity Zero, with the aim of reducing our carbon footprint. We are working with Greener Energy Futures and TEMWA carbon balance to make the business more sustainable and offset our emissions, to help the reforestation in Malawi.

Our Green Energy Pledge

Our nominated ‘Green Energy Champions’ have implemented a green energy pledge across Affinity Workforce and its sub-brands CER, Monarch Education and Sugarman Education, to encourage employees to make small but effective changes during the working day. These includes:

  • Unplugging and turning off devices not in us (including kitchen appliances and media)
  • Switching off lights when not needed
  • Moving from desktop computers to laptops
  • Unplugging laptops once they are fully charged

How to reduce your carbon footprint at home

So what more can we do to help protect our planet? There are lots of small steps you can take to reduce your carbon emissions at home too. Most of these are simple and easy to implement and can make a big difference to the impact you make on the environment.

1. Insulate your home

Heating up your living space can be a very expensive and energy-intensive process. By insulating your lofts and walls, you can ensure your home retains heat during the winter and stays cool during summer. Not only will this reduce your carbon footprint, but also your household bills.

2. Make small changes to your diet

The food we eat has a significant impact on the environment. For example, meat and dairy products require a lot of energy, water and land to produce. Food shipped from overseas also uses a lot more resources than local produce. By eating fewer animal products and shopping for locally-sourced produce can make a big difference.

3. Use less water

It takes a lot of energy to deliver water to our homes and even more to heat it up. So by using less water, you can help the environment and lower your carbon footprint. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and have short showers rather than baths.

5. Take public transportation where possible

Transport accounts for around a fifth of global Carbon Dioxide emissions. If you work for a company that offers hybrid working, take the opportunity to limit your visits to the office.

If not, walking or using a bike instead of a car for short trips can reduce your emissions by approximately 75%. Not only does this lower air pollution, it is also better for your health.
